Since the initial Apple Watch debuted a decade ago, we have been purchasing the most recent model annually.  In addition, starting in 2020, we have also been purchasing the Apple Watch SE annually to compare it to Apple’s top-tier models. apple watch se vs series 10: Which one should you get?  If you want to stay connected and crush your fitness objectives, we’ve tested them all so you can choose the best one.

Every time you put on an Apple Watch SE 2, the first thing that stands out is how small the screen is and how big the bezels are. Compared to the Series models, it feels like a step back, but after a few days, we forget the SE isn’t the newest. It meets our daily needs and is adequate for most users.

The Series 10 might appeal to Apple Watch owners or those wanting the “new tech” experience. Here are four key differences between the models to help you decide.

apple watch se vs series 10: Which Apple Watch Is Better in 2025?

You may set up Family Settings, use the compass, always-on altimeter, detect falls, and choose from two different cellular plans on the apple watch series 10 vs se.  Allow me to touch on ten small traits before we get into the significant differences.  Although they aren’t revolutionary, the Series 10 could be a better choice if you find yourself drawn to a few of these features.

1.     Always-On Display

Upgrading from the SE, the most notable feature of the Series 10 is the Always-On screen. Before explaining why the Always-On screen is so important, it helps to review how the SE screen works. The process begins with powering on the screen.

  • When the SE is not in use, its screen goes dark. A quick twist of the wrist wakes the screen. The motion should feel natural and not forced. It was 98% effective as a wake-up twist.
  • To activate the display, in reality, tap on it.
  • The display gradually lights up when you twist the Digital Crown. Turning it the other way will turn it off.

However, the screen of the Series 10 in no way completely powers down.  When not in use, it turns into much less brilliant and slows all the way down to 1 Hz, even though it remains seen for the time and notifications. To resume full brightness, simply twist the crown, tap the display, or move your wrist.

When you need to take a brief study something even as you are operating out, the Always-On show is a lifesaver.  On a day-by-day basis, we find it to be more of a nuisance than an asset.

Display Dimensions

By decreasing the black bezel area surrounding the screen, moving pixels closer to the edge, and maintaining essentially the same case size, apple watch has tripled the display size over the years.  In essence, the bezels were subtly reduced on an annual basis.

The SE 2 remains available in 40mm and 44mm; however, the Series 10 has expanded to 42mm and 46mm.  The watch retains its slim profile in spite of the two mm expansion.  There are around 30% more pixels within the 42mm Series 10 in comparison to the 40mm SE, and around 25% more pixels within the 46mm Series 10 compared to the 44mm SE 2.  A 42mm Series 10 has about the same number of pixels as a 44mm SE, which is an interesting fact. The SE’s distinctive black bezel area stands out when compared side by side with the Series 10 in terms of size.  The SE features a broader bezel compared to the Series 10’s edge-to-edge display. The Series 10’s higher pixel density improves text legibility and overall usefulness. This is especially helpful during exercise when your focus is often elsewhere.

The difference in screen size is likely to be insignificant to first-time Apple Watch owners.  Those coming from earlier models may find the Series 10’s bigger screen to be more significant than the Always-On feature, especially if they’re upgrading.

Battery

The 40mm apple watch se vs series 10 is powered by a 245mAh battery. The 42mm Series 10 comes with a 282mAh battery, which is 15% larger. The 46mm Series 10 features a 327mAh battery, a 10% increase over the 44mm SE’s 296mAh. Both devices offer what Apple calls an “all-day battery” life lasting 18 hours.

Since the SE does not include the Always-On display, we made sure to test the Series 10 without it in order to make an unbiased comparison.  In my tests, the Series 10 lasted approximately 36 hours with Always-On disabled, which is approximately 20% longer than the SE. Findings vary with usage patterns. To ensure consistency, we followed the same daily routine during testing.

There isn’t much of a difference between the Series 10 and SE when it comes to battery life.  You might want to consider the Series 10 if you intend to keep your watch for a while, though, because of its bigger battery and more efficient CPU.

The Series 10’s quick charging feature is another major plus.  It takes an hour to charge completely, and it gets to 80% in around 30 minutes, which is far faster than the SE’s 2.5 hours.  Sleep tracking and daytime top-offs are both made easier by this faster charging.

Construct High Quality

The SE is available in Midnight, Starlight, and silver aluminum casing colors with an Ion-X glass display, but the Series 10 is available in Jet Black, Rose Gold, and Silver with an enhanced Ion-X glass that is more resistant to cracks.  The changes between the Series 10 ($399) and the base model SE ($249) are not substantial.

An intriguing distinction is the Series 10’s about 10% smaller profile compared to the SE, achieved by shaving off the bottom half of the watch.  This little adjustment brings it closer to the wrist, which is an obvious but minor upgrade.

If your budget allows it, the new titanium models with sapphire glass are a fantastic investment because of their superior durability and scratch resistance compared to Ion-X glass.  My main reason for avoiding the SE every year is the superior build quality of the higher-priced apple watch models, like as titanium or stainless steel from prior years. The SE likely suits you if you’ve never handled high-end materials. You may not realize how little you know.

Which option is right for you?

Which is better: apple watch se vs series 10? Choose Series 10 for a larger screen and Always-On display. If you prefer these features, upgrade from the SE to Series 10. Features like as the keyboard, audio speaker, fast charging, and accurate phone finding are helpful, but they do not revolutionize the game.  The premium titanium models use high-end materials. They are the best sellers in Series 10. However, many cannot afford the $699 price. Value vs. additional features is likely to be your deciding factor when comparing the base models, which is why you’re probably reading this.

If you’re looking for an affordable Apple Watch for the first time, go for the Apple Watch SE 2.  The SE is a fantastic buy because it has all the essential features of the Series 10 and is just as fast.  If you have an older Apple Watch model and are okay with the regular aluminum finish and the screen powering off while not in use, it’s a good choice.  The absence of an Always-On display is the main drawback for the majority of customers.
